Choosing the right food for your pet can feel surprisingly confusing. With so many options on the shelf - from supermarket brands to premium and prescription diets - it is not always clear what is actually best. At Middle Brighton Vet, we regularly help clients navigate nutrition decisions that are right for their individual pet.
The term "vet-recommended" is not regulated, which means any manufacturer can use it. What actually matters is whether a food meets the minimum nutritional standards set by AAFCO (the Association of American Feed Control Officials) or equivalent bodies, and whether it is appropriate for your pet's specific life stage and health status.
Premium commercial diets from reputable manufacturers are generally well formulated and appropriate for healthy adult pets. Prescription or therapeutic diets are different - these are specifically formulated to manage health conditions including kidney disease, urinary disease, diabetes, food allergies, and joint disease. They require veterinary guidance because using the wrong diet for a particular condition can cause harm.
Life stage matters: puppy and kitten foods are formulated differently from adult maintenance foods, which are different again from senior formulations. Feeding the wrong life stage diet over a long period can have real health consequences, particularly in growing animals and in senior pets with changing metabolic needs.
Raw diets require careful consideration. There is limited peer-reviewed evidence that raw diets provide benefits over well-formulated commercial diets, and there are documented risks including bacterial contamination and nutritional imbalance, particularly in home-prepared recipes.
If you are unsure whether your pet's current diet is appropriate, bring it up at your next consultation. We are happy to review what they are eating and make practical suggestions.
