Kitten Grooming Guide

Grooming your kitten is not just about keeping them looking good. It is one of the easiest ways to support their health, build trust, and make future vet visits far less stressful. Start early, keep it positive, and you will end up with a cat who tolerates handling calmly for the rest of their life.

Even short-haired cats benefit from regular brushing. It removes loose hair, reduces hairballs, and gives you a chance to check the skin for any abnormalities - lumps, bumps, parasites, or irritation. Long-haired cats need daily brushing to prevent matting, which can become painful and require sedation to correct if left unmanaged.

Introduce brushing gradually. Start with short sessions, use a soft brush, and associate it with positive reinforcement. Never force it - a negative experience will make future grooming far more difficult.

Nail trimming should also be introduced early. Trim the tips only, avoiding the pink quick inside each nail. If you are unsure, we can show you how at a health check appointment and demonstrate the technique.

Ear checks should be part of your regular routine. Healthy ears are clean and pale pink inside with no odour. Dark waxy debris or a strong smell can indicate ear mites or infection and should be assessed by your vet.

Eye and facial hygiene is important for flat-faced breeds (Persians, Exotics) who are prone to tear staining and skin fold irritation. Daily gentle cleaning prevents build-up and skin infections.
