Laparoscopic Spey: Advanced Desexing Options for Female Dogs

Desexing is one of the most common surgeries performed in veterinary medicine - but surgical techniques have evolved significantly. At Middle Brighton Vet, we offer laparoscopic (keyhole) spey surgery, and we are one of a small number of clinics in this part of Bayside providing this minimally invasive option for female dogs.

Traditional spey surgery involves a larger abdominal incision and requires general anaesthesia. Laparoscopic spey uses two or three very small incisions and a camera, with the ovaries removed through these small ports. The result is significantly less post-operative pain, faster recovery, a lower risk of complications, and a smaller scar.

Studies consistently show that dogs undergoing laparoscopic spey experience less pain in the immediate post-operative period compared to traditional open spey. Recovery is typically faster, with most dogs returning to normal activity within a few days rather than the one to two weeks recommended after open surgery.

Laparoscopic spey is most suitable for dogs from approximately 8 to 12 months of age depending on breed. We discuss timing with each individual patient based on their size, breed and health status.

If you have a female dog and are considering desexing options, call us to discuss whether laparoscopic spey is appropriate. We will take the time to explain both options, the timing, and what to expect from recovery.
