Pet Insurance vs a Wellness Plan - What is the Difference and Which Does Your Pet Need?

We get asked about this one a lot, usually by owners who have just brought home a new puppy or kitten and are trying to figure out what good financial protection actually looks like for their pet.

It is a great question and one we love talking through, because getting this right is genuinely one of the most practical ways to make sure your pet always gets the care they deserve, without the cost ever becoming the thing that drives the decision.

The short version: insurance is for the things you hope never happen. A wellness plan is for the things you know will happen. Most pets benefit from having both, and understanding the difference is the key to making a decision that actually fits your pet and your situation.

What is pet insurance?

Pet insurance is a financial safety net for the unexpected. You pay a regular premium and if your pet becomes ill or is injured, the insurer covers a portion of the treatment costs up to your policy limit.

A good policy can cover things like emergency treatment after an accident, surgery for illness or injury, specialist referrals and imaging, hospitalisation, and in some cases ongoing management of chronic conditions.

What it does not typically cover is routine and preventive care: vaccinations, annual health checks, parasite prevention, dental cleans. These are planned expenses, and most standard policies are designed for the unplanned ones.

One important thing to know: insurance works best when it is taken out while your pet is young and healthy. Pre-existing conditions are almost always excluded, and premiums are more affordable early. The best time to organise cover is before anything has been diagnosed, not after.

What is a wellness plan?

A wellness plan is a proactive, structured approach to your pet's routine preventive care. Rather than paying for individual services as they come up, you pay a regular amount that covers a defined set of preventive health services throughout the year.

At Middle Brighton Vet, our Thriving Pets Wellness Plan is built around the things that genuinely keep pets well long-term: health checks, vaccinations, dental assessments, parasite prevention, and other core services tailored to your pet's life stage.

A wellness plan is not insurance. If something unexpected happens, your wellness plan does not cover those costs. What it does do is make sure your pet's preventive care happens consistently, keeps those costs predictable and manageable, and means your vet genuinely knows your animal well over time.

That last point matters more than people often realise. A pet we see twice a year is a pet whose baseline we know. Subtle changes are much easier to notice, and earlier detection almost always means better outcomes.

The clearest way to think about the difference

Insurance protects you from the bill you did not see coming. A wellness plan means the care that keeps your pet healthy never gets put off because of cost.

They protect against different things entirely, which is exactly why having both is useful for many pet owners rather than one or the other.

Can you have both at the same time?

Absolutely, and they complement each other well. Your wellness plan covers the services within the plan. If a wellness visit uncovers something that needs further treatment, that cost may be claimable on your insurance depending on your policy. They work alongside each other without any conflict.

A combination that works well for a lot of families: a wellness plan to keep routine care consistent and affordable, and an insurance policy with a reasonable excess for the unexpected. Together they mean you are covered for almost any eventuality, and you can always make decisions based on what is right for your pet.

Which one makes sense for your pet right now?

There is no single right answer, but here are some useful ways to think about it.

Insurance tends to make more sense when your pet is young and healthy and you can lock in a lower premium, when you have a breed with known health predispositions, or when an unexpected bill would put real strain on your household. It is also worth considering if your pet is particularly active or adventurous (bless them).

A wellness plan tends to make more sense when you want your routine costs to be predictable and spread over the year, when you value the consistency of a vet who genuinely knows your pet over time, or when you find yourself putting off check-ups because of cost. It can also be a great fit for pets in their senior years, when routine care becomes more frequent and more important.

Both together makes sense for most pets, especially those whose breed history suggests likely health issues down the track.

Questions we hear often

Does pet insurance cover routine vaccinations and check-ups?

Standard policies generally do not. Some offer wellness add-on options, but these tend to be separate to the core policy and vary quite a bit in what they include. It is worth comparing carefully before assuming they offer the same value as a dedicated wellness plan through your vet.

What does the Thriving Pets Wellness Plan at MBV actually include?

We would love to let you explore that for yourself. Head to the Thriving Pets website to see everything that is included and try out the savings calculator to see what it could mean for your pet.

Can I use my wellness plan and insurance at the same visit?

Yes. Your wellness plan covers the services within it. If something is found that needs treatment, that cost can often be claimed through insurance separately. They sit alongside each other without any issue.

My pet already has a health condition. Is insurance still worth exploring?

Possibly, yes. The existing condition will almost certainly be excluded, but a policy can still cover everything else. Read the terms carefully, ask specific questions about your pet's known conditions, and make sure you understand exactly what is and is not included before committing.
