Summer Parasites in Melbourne: Fleas, Ticks & Worms

While summer means more time outdoors for many pets, it also creates ideal conditions for parasites. In Melbourne - including Brighton and the Bayside area - fleas, ticks and intestinal worms are far more active during warmer months. At Middle Brighton Vet, we frequently see parasite-related issues escalate in summer, particularly in pets whose prevention has lapsed or who spend more time in parks, gardens and coastal areas.

Fleas thrive in warm, humid conditions. A single female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, meaning an infestation can develop quickly. Year-round prevention is strongly recommended, but if your pet's treatment has lapsed over winter, now is the time to update it.

Paralysis ticks are found along the east coast of Australia and can be fatal if not treated promptly. If you travel with your pets to tick-prone areas - the Dandenong Ranges, the Mornington Peninsula, or further north along the coast - ensure your tick prevention is current and check your pet thoroughly after each visit.

Intestinal worms including roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm are present year-round but are more commonly picked up when pets are spending more time outdoors. Regular worming every three months is recommended for adult dogs and cats.

If you are unsure what parasite prevention your pet is currently on, or whether it is up to date, bring your pet in for a health check and we will review their prevention programme.
