Twice a Year for a Longer, Happier Life

Why We Recommend Six-Monthly Health Checks From Age Five

One of the things we love most about seeing the same pets year after year is watching them grow, change, and thrive. As your dog or cat moves into their middle and senior years, it is important to note, that familiar face can sometimes hide a lot. Six months in a pet’s life represents far more change than it does in ours, and the more we know about what’s happening at home, the better placed we are to look after them.

That is why we suggest moving to six-monthly health checks once pets reach around five years of age (especially for medium and large breed dogs). Annual visits are still a wonderful foundation, but for our more mature patients, we find a lot can quietly shift in between.

These visits are about so much more than vaccinations. They give us the chance to build a clear picture of your pet’s health over time and to notice small changes before they have a chance to become something bigger.

Why More Frequent Checks Matter

Pets are remarkably stoic. Many are hardwired to mask discomfort, so by the time obvious symptoms appear, a condition may already be well established. Our job is to look for the things that aren’t yet obvious: the small, subtle clues your pet can’t tell you about themselves.

A lot can shift in six months, particularly in older pets. During a wellness exam we’re keeping a close eye on things like:

  • Early arthritis and mobility changes
  • Dental disease
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Heart changes or murmurs
  • Skin lumps and bumps
  • Changes in hearing or eyesight
  • Kidney, liver or thyroid concerns
  • Behavioural or cognitive changes

Finding these things early almost always means simpler treatment, better outcomes  and often less cost in the long run.

Pets Age Faster Than We Think

It is something owners are often genuinely surprised to hear,  a five to seven year old pet may already be approaching what we’d consider middle age.

Large breed dogs tend to age particularly quickly, and cats (bless them) are absolute masters at looking perfectly fine well into their senior years.

More regular check-ins become increasingly valuable as pets move through their mature years. Even when everything seems completely normal at home, a hands-on exam often picks up things that just aren’t visible from the couch.

What Happens During a Six-Monthly Check?

Every six-monthly visit is tailored to your individual pet: their age, breed, history, and what’s been happening at home since we last saw them. We genuinely want to hear from you: changes in eating, drinking, sleeping, energy levels, toileting, how they move around the house, anything that has caught your attention. That conversation is often just as valuable as the physical examination itself, you are the expert on your pet’s everyday life, and that knowledge helps us build a far more complete picture of their health.

Depending on where your pet is in their life stage, we’ll generally take a look at:

  • Weight and body condition
  • Teeth and gums
  • Joint movement and mobility
  • Heart and lung health
  • Skin and coat condition
  • Eyes and ears
  • Changes in appetite, thirst or behaviour

For some patients, we’ll also talk through whether blood or urine testing makes sense, as they are a great way to catch organ or metabolic changes before any symptoms appear.

Prevention Is Always Better Than Reaction

One of the greatest benefits of regular wellness care for dogs and cats is that we build a true health baseline:  a running picture of what’s normal for your pet specifically, not just for pets in general. Preventative care for pets isn’t just about treating problems; it’s about understanding your individual animal deeply enough to notice when something shifts. The more context you can share with us at each visit-  about habits, routines, appetite, behaviour,  the richer that picture becomes.

Small deviations from that baseline are so much easier to notice when we’re seeing your pet consistently. Early action, when it’s needed, almost always translates to more comfortable, higher quality years ahead.

Our goal with every visit is the same, to help your pet live a longer, more comfortable, more vibrant life alongside you.

Not Sure If Your Pet Is Due?

If your dog or cat is over five and it’s been more than six months since their last check, it’s a lovely time to pop in. We’d love to see them.

The team at Middle Brighton Vet is always happy to chat through what preventative health care looks like for your specific pet: their age, breed, lifestyle, and everything in between. Part of what we do at every visit is help you understand what to watch for at home, so that together we can stay one step ahead. The more you notice and share with us, the better we can tailor their care.
