Desexing Your Kitten: What You Need to Know

Desexing is one of the most important health decisions you will make for your kitten, and one of the most common procedures we perform. It is safe, routine, and offers lifelong benefits for your cat without changing the personality you love.

What Is Desexing?

Desexing (also called spaying or neutering) is a surgical procedure that permanently prevents your kitten from reproducing. For females, this means removing the ovaries and uterus (a spay). For males, it means removing the testicles (a castration). Both procedures are performed under general anaesthetic by our experienced veterinary team.

When Should You Desex Your Kitten?

In Australia, the recommended age for kitten desexing is usually between four and six months. This is earlier than many people expect, and for good reason: cats can reach sexual maturity from as young as four months of age, meaning a kitten can fall pregnant while still a kitten herself.

Early desexing is safe and is endorsed by the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA). We will confirm the ideal timing for your kitten's individual needs at their health checks.

What to Expect on the Day

Admission: Your kitten comes in first thing in the morning, after fasting overnight (no food from midnight).

Anaesthesia: The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic. Your kitten is monitored closely throughout.

Surgery: Routine desexing generally takes less than an hour.

Recovery: Most kittens go home the same afternoon, a little drowsy but comfortable.

Common Questions

Will it change my kitten's personality?
No. Desexing reduces hormone-driven behaviours, but your kitten's sweet personality stays exactly the same.

Is it safe?
Yes. Desexing is a very common, safe procedure performed under general anaesthesia. We take every precaution to keep your kitten comfortable and cared for throughout.

Will my kitten gain weight?
Desexed cats can have slightly lower energy needs, but weight gain is easily managed with the right food and activity level. We can help you adjust their feeding plan after surgery.

Council Registration and Reduced Fees

Most Victorian councils require cats to be desexed and microchipped to qualify for reduced registration fees. We will provide a desexing certificate for your records after the procedure.
