Cats are naturally clean animals, but they still benefit from our help, especially long-haired breeds and young kittens still learning to groom themselves. Starting grooming early is one of the best things you can do for your kitten's health and for the relationship between you.
Regular grooming is about far more than appearance. It helps you:
Kittens are naturally curious and adaptable, which makes the early weeks the ideal time to introduce gentle handling. A kitten who grows up comfortable with being touched, held, and groomed becomes a cat who is far easier to care for, medicate, and examine throughout their life.
Spend a few minutes each day touching these key areas:
Always use treats, toys, and gentle praise to make grooming sessions a positive experience. Keep them short, and stop well before your kitten becomes anxious.
Grooming frequency depends on your kitten's coat type:
If you are unsure what your kitten's coat needs, just ask our team.
You do not need much to get started:
Keeping nails trimmed prevents scratching injuries and reduces furniture damage. Every two to four weeks is a good cadence for most kittens. Use clippers designed for cats, and trim just the sharp tip, avoiding the pink quick inside the nail. If you are not confident, we can show you how at your next visit, or trim them for you.
A small amount of wax in the ears is normal. If you notice excessive dark wax, redness, a bad smell, or your kitten shaking their head frequently, book a check. For eyes, gently wipe any discharge with a soft damp cloth, working from the inner corner outwards.
Our team is happy to offer grooming guidance, product recommendations, and referrals to trusted local groomers at any of your kitten's visits. Call us on (03) 9592 9811 or book online.
