Kitten Nutrition: A Great Start Begins in the Bowl

Kittens grow remarkably fast, and the right food makes a real difference. Good nutrition supports strong bones, a healthy coat, a sharp mind, and the endless energy kittens are known for. It also helps their immune systems develop, supports a healthy weight, and sets them up for a long and happy adult life.

Why Nutrition Matters Right Now

When kittens are born, their immune systems are still developing. In the first days of life, they rely on antibodies passed through their mother's first milk (colostrum) to help protect them from illness. This borrowed immunity does not last forever; it starts to fade between four and twelve weeks of age.

During this period, known as the immunity gap, kittens are more vulnerable to illness. Their mother's protection is running out, and their own immune system is still building. The food they eat during this stage plays an important supporting role.

Quality kitten foods are designed to fill this gap and build strong defences. They typically include:

Choosing the right kitten food now does not just keep your kitten healthy today. It helps set them up for a healthier, happier adult life.

What a Growing Kitten Needs

How to Feed Your Kitten Well

Choose the right food. Pick a reputable kitten food made for your kitten's age and breed size. Small wet meals a few times a day, plus a quality dry food for grazing, works well for most kittens.

Feed the right amount. Not sure how much? Our nurses are happy to help you read the feeding guide and work out the right quantity for your kitten's size and age.

Adjust as they grow. Kittens' nutritional needs change quickly, especially after desexing. We can help you update their feeding plan at each life stage.

Water, not milk. Fresh, clean water is best. Contrary to popular belief, regular cow's milk can cause tummy upsets in cats. Only offer milk if it is specifically lactose-free and designed for cats.

Keep mealtimes consistent. Feeding at regular times helps avoid digestive upsets and keeps your kitten settled.

Regular weigh-ins. Book regular checks with us to make sure your kitten is growing on track. We are always happy to see them.

A Few Important Tips

After Desexing

Once your kitten is desexed, their energy needs may drop a little. It is a good time to check in with us and adjust their feeding plan so their weight stays on track as they move into adulthood.

When to Give Us a Call

Please get in touch if your kitten is not eating or is losing weight, if you are unsure about what or how much to feed, or if you notice vomiting, diarrhoea, or any changes in appetite. We are always here to help.
