Welcoming a new puppy or kitten into your home comes with a few important responsibilities. One of the most important is protecting them from parasites. These pests can cause significant discomfort and, in some cases, serious illness. The good news is that with the right routine, they are easy to prevent.
Parasite control is not just about your pet's comfort. It is about keeping them strong, safe, and healthy as they grow, and protecting your household too, as some parasites can be passed to humans.
A monthly all-in-one product covering fleas, heartworm, and intestinal worms. Intestinal tapeworm coverage may require a separate tablet every six months. Annual health checks and yearly C5 vaccination (including kennel cough coverage) complete the routine.
A longer-acting approach using annual injections for heartworm (Proheart SR-12) and fleas (Bravecto), with intestinal worming via tablet or chew every three months (such as Drontal or Milbemax). Annual health checks and yearly C5 vaccination continue as above.
A monthly spot-on or tablet covering fleas, heartworm, and intestinal worms. Annual health checks and yearly F3 vaccination (plus FIV if recommended) complete the routine.
Longer-acting products for fleas and heartworm, with intestinal tapeworm treated by tablet every three months. Annual health checks and yearly F3 vaccination (plus FIV if recommended) continue as above.
Keeping parasites out of the home is part of the picture. Regular vacuuming, washing bedding and clothing at high temperatures, and keeping outdoor areas clean all reduce the risk of environmental contamination. Some parasites, including roundworm and lice, can be transmitted to humans, so wash your hands thoroughly after handling pets, their waste, or their bedding.
