Puppies grow fast, and the right food makes a real difference. Good nutrition supports strong bones, a shiny coat, boundless energy, and a healthy immune system. It also helps your puppy reach the right weight and sets them up for a lifetime of good health.
When puppies are born, their immune systems are still developing. In the first days of life, they receive important antibodies through their mother's first milk (colostrum). This borrowed protection is helpful early on, but it starts to fade between four and twelve weeks of age.
During this period, known as the immunity gap, your puppy is more vulnerable to illness. Their mother's protection is running out, and their own immune system is still building. The food they eat during this stage plays an important supporting role.
Specially formulated puppy foods from trusted brands are designed to give your puppy the nutrients they need at this critical time. They typically include:
Choosing the right puppy food now does not just keep your puppy healthy today. It helps set them up for a healthy, happy adult life.
Choose the right food. Pick a reputable puppy food made for your puppy's breed size. Large breed puppies have different nutritional needs to small breeds.
Feed the right amount. Not sure how much? Our nurses are happy to help you read the feeding guide and work out the right quantity for your pup's size and age.
Adjust as they grow. Puppies' nutritional needs change, especially after desexing. We can help you update their feeding plan at each life stage.
Water, not milk. Fresh, clean water is best. Only offer milk if it is specifically lactose-free. Regular milk can cause tummy upsets.
Regular weigh-ins. Book regular checks with us to make sure your puppy is growing on track. We are always happy to see them.
Once your puppy is desexed, their energy needs may change. It is a good time to check in with us and adjust their feeding plan so their weight stays on track.
Please get in touch if your puppy is not eating or is losing weight, if you are unsure about what or how much to feed, or if you notice vomiting, diarrhoea, or any changes in appetite. We are always here to help.
